So Xbox is definitely causing a stir with much-needed results for its platform. High on Life is a much more original title than the two, so it’s a bit more impressive that it succeeds this way. It’s basically a shooter where your weapon talks to you. Or more broadly, it’s a comedic shooter from the imagination of Rick and Morty creator Justin Roiland, where guns speak to you in a variety of voices and personalities.
We were really impressed when we played an hour of High on Life at Gamescom 2022 this summer, so it’s no surprise that it made its way to Xbox Game Pass to word-of-mouth success. In fact, Xbox just confirmed that the game has become the biggest Game Pass launch of any kind in 2022 and the biggest third-party launch ever on the service. That really puts it in the rare stratosphere of games like Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5.
All set in an alien universe alive, strange and mature. The game’s tone is fun and its simple arcade shooter keeps things pleasant and light without keeping you immersed in the game system. That’s exactly the kind of weird title Game Pass fits well, and it will be interesting to see if the service can duplicate this success story with the 2023 vehicle.
